Preventive maintenance

Preventive maintenance is the ordinary routine of inspection testing, cleaning, drying, varnishing, adjusting & lubricating electrical apparatus.

Advantages of preventive maintenance program:-

  • Provides planned shut downs during periods of inactivity or least usage for the purpose of measure overhauls.
  • Ensures continuity of operation & lessens the danger of breakdown at peak loads.
  • Such a program provides early detection of troubles & corrective action that can be taken before extensive damage is done.
  • High cost of downtime is brought to minimum.

Maintenance can be classified as below:-

  1. Scheduled maintenance
  2. Breakdown maintenance
  3. Emergency maintenance
  4. Shutdown maintenance

(1) Scheduled maintenance – When the maintenance is done in a planned manner on due date it is called scheduled maintenance. Generally, this period is given by manufacturer. This period can be adjusted on the basis of past & experience. This is also known as preventive maintenance.

(2) Breakdown maintenance – When equipment goes out of order then the maintenance is called as repair or breakdown maintenance

(3) Emergency maintenance – It is temporary measure to keep equipment running for short period, so the whole process of manufacture doesn’t go out of order.

(4) Shut down maintenance – It is called overhaul. It is planned in advance in such a manner that the production doesn’t suffer to a great extent. It is done either before or after the peak season of production.
